Beaches - the Early Years

I was reviewing and organizing pictures this week and ran across a bunch from the Austin Burks' visit to Wiser Times last summer. These are priceless and are a great example of how the beach works with really little kids. So I thought I would share them.

First, there are the preliminaries, like checking out your equipment.

Contemplating the big plunge.

And of course, the sunscreen application.

Then some experimentation with "the big water".

And finally, "I can do it myself!"

After their big water adventure, Cyrus and Leili head for a little warm up with the Ps, Ted and Sara.

Once recovered, it's time for the kids to get down to the serious business of sand castles. First, one needs to pick the right tools.

Then there is the venue to select.

And some preliminary instruction.

Followed by heavy construction.

A little consultation.

And finally, the finishing touches.

And TADA! The completed masterpiece.

Unfortunately, someone is always stuck with the cleanup. This day it was the shortest player.

Of course, building is hard work so another dip in the lake was in order. I took this opportunity to school Cyrus in the manly art of noodling. First, an orientation to this complex aquatic device.

Then the basic one foot float.

Followed by the tricky two-foot float. This boy is a natural. Of course, it's in his blood :-)

Here's a shot of the two dads, basking in the glow of our accomplishments - sand castles and noodling. We're at the top of our game. Note Grandpa's "hoser holder" - the only way to make sure no one makes off with your adult pop.

After a hard day using your noodle, a little refreshment is in order. Here is a shot of Cyrus sneaking up on a piece of watermelon.

Making his move.

And declaring victory.

All the while, Princess Leili has been primping and is now ready for Happy Hour. Now who does she look like in this picture?

And what day at the beach would be complete without a S'More or two. Here are some shots of the Austin crowd enjoying this fun ritual.

And a final shot of Wiser Times, content in another day of fulfilling it's primary role - bringing the family together.

And yes. These pictures have started me counting the days until summer. See you on the beach.
